Sean Lang was born in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada on the 18th of November of 1986 to a very musical family. He was exposed to music early on and really reacted to it. Tapping on anything he could find was a habit that hinted to what was soon to be. At the age of 10, Sean Lang was bestowed with a drum set by his parents. They bought him a starter kit, which he called The Duke, because a friend of theirs had one that Sean loved pounding on whenever they paid him a visit.
Sean Lang spent his first three years learning from different teachers. He eventually got tired of bouncing from instructor to instructor and decided to teach himself how to play. This didn’t go as well as he expected, and after about three years of not learning anything he found in the internet the teacher he was looking for. Initially, Sean Lang swore he would never play in front of people or with a band. However, his perspective on what he wanted to achieve with his drumming changed dramatically once he read Virgil Donati’s cover story in the August, 1999 issue of Modern Drummer magazine. Virgil’s commitment to drumming and massive control over the instrument inspired Sean Lang to play and really make something out of his drumming. Derek Roddy, Gene Hoglan, Mike Portnoy and Tomas Haake are other drummers Sean Lang looks up to.
During his time in high-school, Sean Lang played in the school and jazz bands. In 2004 he joined the heavy metal powerhouse First Reign and began teaching drums as well. Since then, Sean Lang has taught over 50 students privately and thousands online through his lessons on FreeDrumLessons.com, DrumLessons.com and Bass Drum Secrets 2.0 (2011). Sean Lang’s obsession with polyrhythms and grooving in odd-times and his mastery of double bass drumming and heavy metal, in conjunction with his ability to simplify these complex subjects, make him a powerful addition to the Drumeo roster of teachers. The ability to interact with so many drummers and to be able to help them with something he’s incredibly passionate about is what excites Sean the most about Drumeo.
Sean Lang is a big fan of keeping things local when it comes to the drum gear he plays, so most brands he uses are Canadian. He endorses Casey Drums because of their heavenly sound and Los Cabos Drumsticks because of their durability and perfect balance. Besides playing live and recording with the gear from these brands, he uses them to work on his own drumming. Currently, Sean Lang is practicing rudiments around the kit and the “table of time” up to nine.
Besides all the work Sean Lang has developed with First Reign over the years, he has played with artist like Cruel Young Heart, Nettwerk recording artist Joshua Hyslop and Undercurrents. Sean is currently working with First Reign, Subdivisions and on Seven Years Storm, his own musical project. Now, Sean Lang is not all about music. He’s a fan of watching television and going to the movies. The flick Hot Rod and the series Lost are his favorites.
