Creativity is something all musicians struggle with. You have the vocabulary from doing countless different drum exercises, but how do you express yourself more freely?
JP Bouvet is here with his band Childish Japes to share one concept they’ve used to escape the standard writing process and how it allows them to explore a plethora of unique ideas. It’s all based around establishing and changing roles in the band.
In a normal jam setting, each instrument is has their own roles:

As you can see, just by redefining those roles you’re forced to play outside of your comfort zone. Just because you’re being more creative doesn’t guarantee the results will be objectively better, however through trial and error, I’m sure you’ll be able to think up some pretty cool ideas!
